BSE INSTITUTE, KOLKATA

On 28th July, 2023 the Finance Specialization students of MBA -26, Army Institute of Management Kolkata visited the BSE Institute Camac Street, Kolkata. The Primary purpose of this visit was to understand the inner workings of the stock market and how one can supplement their earnings by investing in the shares of different companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange
The briefing given by the Regional Manager, Mr. Shubhayu Das, was exhaustive and covered the myriad aspects of the stock market and the BSE. He began by informing us that Asia’s largest and oldest stock exchange celebrated its 150th Foundation Day on 10/07/2023. A new logo of the BSE was also released on that day to mark the occasion. Incidentally the Army Institute of Management Kolkata was celebrating its 27th Foundation Day on the day of the visit Mr. Das also highlighted the fact that the BSE is the world’s fastest stock exchange with a speed of 6 microseconds.
He also explained the meaning of an “Index” in the context of stock markets. Mr. Das then went on to highlight the importance of the S&P BSE SENSEX. The S&P stands for the Standard & Poor’s, a global ratings agency, while SENSEX stands for “Sensitivity Index”. Therefore, this index represents the movement of stock prices in the stock market and their “sensitivity” towards various factors.
Apart from the Bombay Stock Exchange, there are 6 exchanges in India. They are: Calcutta Stock Exchange(inactive), Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India, Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange, Indian Commodity Exchange (inactive), and the other main Stock exchange of India; the National Stock Exchange (NSE). We were also shown a “live demo” of the online trading and data viewing aspects of the BSE website. The speaker also demonstrated the use of several informational softwares and websites like investing.com, screener.in, metastock, moneycontrol.com, etc.
The BSE Institute also offers various education programs for beginners and amateurs to learn the art & science of stock trading, investing, and developing a 2nd source of income. The visit ended with the presentation of a memento to Mr. Shubhayu Das by our esteemed Professor, Dr. J. N. Mukhopadhyay.
Mr Das believes that investors, especially young graduates like us, should move away from only investing money in real estate & gold and instead also focus on the share market. They should thoroughly research and identify high quality companies and hold the shares for yielding excellent returns in the long term. This resonates with the idea that our faculty DrJnm also propounds.
We are thankful to the Institute for arranging this visit and the learning experience accorded to us.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT – TITAGARH WAGONS LTD.

The first Industrial Visit for MBA-26, was conducted on 15th November, 2022. The location for the visit was Titagarh Wagons Ltd. in the Anandapur area of Kolkata. The company manufactures coaches for the Indian Railways, bailey bridges, and mining equipment. Titagarh Marines, a subsidiary company of Titagarh Wagons Ltd., operates in the shipbuilding industry. The tour was organized under the Placement Cell and was co-ordinated by Ms. Ananya Singh of Section A, MBA-26. The main purpose of this visit was to provide an insight into the practical aspects of businesses and topics related to the MBA program.
The welcoming employees of the organization arranged a guided tour of the various sections of the factory. From the perspective of an MBA student, we could observe the Organizational hierarchy, the styles of leadership, the day-to-day operations of the factory, the supply chains involved, the various financial aspects that would have to be considered in order to bid for, secure and execute each ship or wagon building contract.
We also learnt that the company was founded in 1997 by Jagadish Prasad Chowdhary with an annual production capacity of 180 wagons. Since then the company has grown manifold and supplies various products apart from wagons. Some of the products and services that the company is engaged in, are:

Railway freight

  • Rolling stock
  • Components
  • Bogies
  • Couplers
  • Locomotive shells
  • Gears

Railway transit

  • Rolling stock
  • Electric locomotives
  • EMU trainsets
  • DEMU trainsets
  • Metros
  • Light rail transports
  • Body shells
  • Bogies
  • Propulsion & electrical equipment

Shipbuilding

  • Coastal research vessels
  • Naval vessels
  • Passenger ships
  • Tugs
  • Inland vessels

Other engineering services

  • Bailey bridges
  • Defence

In 2015, the company acquired the brand name and know-how of French cast steel bogie manufacturer Sambre et Meuse. In July same year, they acquired a 90% stake in Italian rail equipment firm Firema Trasporti for about 25 million euros. The remaining 10% stake was acquired by them in June 2017 from an Italian company Adler Plastics SpA. The company was subsequently renamed as Titagarh Firema SpA. Titagarh Firema designs metro rail coaches and manufactures them at its factories at Caserta, Spello and Tito.
In 2019, Titagarh Firema was awarded the contract to supply 102 aluminium bodied metro rail coaches for the Pune Metro by Mahametro. While 3 of the total 34 rakes would be manufactured at the Firema plant in Italy, the remaining 31 trainsets would be manufactured at TWL's facility in Uttarpara. However in March 2020 due the COVID-19 pandemic it was decided that the company would have to suspend the planned operations in Italy.
The production site we visited is primarily meant for the shipbuilding and goods train wagons side of the vast business of Titagrah Wagons and its various subsidiaries. Our hosts took the opportunity to also explain the technical details of the production operations, the measurements, the terminologies used and the various phases of production that a vessel and wagon go through before we get to the form we see them in our daily lives.
We went aboard the under-construction ship MV MA LISHA being built for Guyana in South America. The supervisor of the project explained to us the various sections of a vessel such as the MV MA LISHA, and how the different parts are first built/casted separately and then assembled. After assembly, the vessel goes through various quality control and safety tests before it is signed off setting sail to its destination country. We obviously clicked plenty of pictures to document this cool experience of ours.
The wagons side of the manufacturing facility was less “exciting” since we were mostly told to keep our safe distance for the heavy machinery and the not to get in the way of the employees working there. Nonetheless, the explanations and demos we got more than made up for it. Some of the information regarding the specifictions of the designs and materials, etc. were said to classified and hence not open to public discussions, which alos gave us a window in the competitive world of wagons and shipbuilding industry.
Overall there was a lot to learn from the vist and a few of the takeaways have been summarised in this report. Each individual also took some unique learnings back with them and would cherish the memories and the learnings for a long time to come. We are thankful to AIMK for this opportunity of learning and hope that there are more such visits in the future.
