Agomoni is a significant occasion in Bengali culture. It marks the beginning of the Devi Paksha. The most famous Mahalaya program is the "Mahishasura Mardini’’. The narration is a portrayal of the goddess Durga as she prepares to battle the demon Mahishasura. The enchanting recitation, combined with soul-stirring music, dance creates a unique and spiritual atmosphere, Agomoni sets the tone for the grand celebration of Durga Puja, one of the most significant festivals in the Bengali calendar. The festival marks the triumph of goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura and symbolizes the victory of good over evil. The entire community comes together to celebrate with elaborate decorations, cultural programs, and of course, the worship of goddess Durga in beautifully crafted pandals.
